IT Equipment + Lifecycle Planning
The United States Postal Service (USPS) operates at national scale, and much of its mail processing equipment is built to run continuously—often long after the original computing hardware has reached end-of-life. For the AFCS 200 platform (a core letter mail processing system), USPS needed to modernize both software and hardware without creating downtime risks, maintenance dead-ends, or fragmented vendor handoffs. They also needed a path forward that could support future security requirements as real-time systems move toward modern security expectations (including zero trust).
Silent Solutions supported the AFCS 200 modernization as a full-stack system contributor—combining real-time software development, custom hardware engineering, and integration planning to modernize aging systems while keeping operations reliable.
Key elements included:
Real-time software development to modernize and extend machine functionality while maintaining performance demands.
Custom PCBA design and manufacturing to replace aging components and keep critical equipment viable as legacy parts became unsupportable.
Hardware replacement + virtualization strategy to eliminate end-of-life maintenance issues tied to outdated computers.
Coordinated delivery with a major system supplier (Corber, formerly Siemens): Corber handled physical installation and a new camera component, while Silent Solutions delivered the “brains” of the solution—software, logic, virtualization, boards, and supporting equipment.
A generosity-driven approach: Silent Solutions leaned in to solve problems beyond narrow scope boundaries to keep momentum and reduce friction—especially important in large, multi-vendor modernization programs.
The modernization delivered immediate, practical outcomes while setting USPS up for the next phase of deployment and long-term security improvements.
Reduced operational risk by replacing obsolete computers and eliminating end-of-life maintenance constraints through modern hardware and virtualization.
Scaled deployment nationally: the AFCS 200 modernization is ongoing, with 148 of 550 machines deployed and a new phase starting.
Strengthened Silent Solutions’ position as a system supplier—delivering integrated hardware, software, and engineering outcomes in a space typically dominated by much larger primes.
